What are the foods to be avoided for chicken pox?

Chicken pox is caused by varicella-zoster virus (VZV).This virus is easily contagious from one person to other person.It is very common among children,youngsters or aged people. It is transmitted through contact with an infected person.The viruses can spread through inhaling air particles from saliva, sneezing, coughing, contact with fluid from the blisters from an infected person.It is also indirectly spread when clothes wore by an infected person is used by other persons.When the sores are completely dry,it is no longer contagious.The most common symptoms are

  • Itchy skin,
  • Red rashes,
  • Fever
  • little red or pink bumps
  • Loss of appetite
  • Headache
  • Weakness or tiredness

We can take lukewarm water bath and also can wear light weight ,cotton,soft clothing.In most cases,the chicken pox can be cured by its own within one or two weeks.So there is no need to worry about the varicella-zoster virus.It provides immunity for life long time period.

It is contagious virus so eat very healthy food which is easily digestible and helps to recover quickly.Following are the some of the unhealthy foods that is to be avoided.Unhealthy diet make our immune system not to receive the essential nutrients from the food.

  • Avoid foods like peanuts, walnuts, tree nuts, seeds and raisins that rich in arginine
  • Avoid to consume dairy products like ice cream, butter and cheese which makes skin oily and cause itching
  • Meat:Avoid red meats which is heat producing food.Avoid any type of non vegetarian so that you can maintain your body as cool.It will help us for quick recovery
  • Citrus fruits: Don’t consume citrus fruits or juices like lemon,orange which consist of high acidic content.It will cause irritation in the sores. It delays healing and cause intense pain
  • Foods with more fat: The foods like dark chocolate , dry coconut, butter, fish oils, nuts to be avoided because these are rich in saturated fat.The fatty foods are hard and difficult to digest for the infected body.It decreases the recovery period
  • Fast Foods: Avoid salty, spicy, junk, acidic and fried foods which decreases the healing.Salty foods cause irritation and sores in the throat or mouth.Consuming spicy foods causes inflammation and chest pain which is uncomfortable during chicken pox.Junk foods make us to feel heavy and unhealthy which feels like extra burden to our body.Fried foods contain oil and slows down the recovery process
  • Avoid foods with added sugars, high carbohydrates because it slows down the healing
  • Foods that are heavy for the body to process should be avoided.Eat soft or cool foods which is easily digestible
  • Unhealthy diet will reduce the healing process
  • Don’t drink very hot drinks or hot water.Drink the water which is boiled and cool down

Foods to be included

  • Drink more water  to stay hydrated and drink more fluids
  • Eat more vegetables and fruits
  • Eat calcium,zinc and magnesium rich foods like corns, beans, vegetables and fruits, asparagus, soy milk, whole wheat bread and whole grain cereal
  • Consume more ragi the finger millet which is rich source of calcium
  • Apply basil leaf juice or coconut oil or honey or neem leaves water or neem paste to get rid from itching
